Baby Leg Warmer Pattern


Apparently the in thing for babies these days are leg warmers. So, I thought I would try my hand at knitting a pair. So what do you think? If you like them, directions are below. Drop me a line if you have any questions.

I recommend using a yarn with some give like acrylic, not cotton.

Directions for a 24 month child

Size 6 needles

100% Acrylic Worsted Weight 4 ply

Cast on of 32 stitches

For the first 5 rows knit rib stitch (knit 2, purl 2)

stock knit stitch till piece measures 8 1/2 inches (or desired length)

For the last 5 rows knit rib stitch (knit 2, purl 2)

bind of, leave a long tail for weaving

If you want, sew an image to the front of your piece ( I made the Eiffel tower and added a bow)

Fold right sides together and stitch edges to make a tube. turn right side out, done

    Do you have any instructions for making a smaller size? I'd like to use these for my new baby (EDD Dec 5), while I'm ECing.

    Monica,
    When I made knit leggings for my little one, I just started with measurements of his legs. I measured how fat his little thigh was, then cast on as many stitches as I needed to achieve that measurement. (I made a swatch first, then did some math.)

    Then I figured how how long to make it by continually holding it up to his little legs until I thought it was long enough.

    I second the recommendation to use something with some stretch, though. I used sockweight cotton and, in retrospect, not the best choice there,

    Congrats on your recent Craft blog mentions. I saw the babylegs sold in a local store and immediately thought, "I could *so* make those." I did mine in a rib for my daughter. The little bit of stretch helps keep them up during gymnastics and general toddler running around.

    These are adorable!!! Were you able to make the pair out of one 50gram ball? I have some adorable wool/mohair/acrylic blend that I think would work for this.

    I believe I used on 56.7g ball. I'm not positive, but I think there was some left over. You should be fine.

    Thanks so much for sharing this pattern-- I love the chic touch of Paris! I made a white pair for my 15 month old based on your pattern... then got to thinking that beginning with sz 6s and then switching to sz 9s and adding an eyelet row for ribbon would be cute, too. So, I did-- all thanks to your creative post! Now I check out your blog weekly, and I really enjoy your posts.

    Thanks for this. I have just made a pair but adapted your instructions slightly. Because my grandchcild is due in 5 weeks, and I didn't want the baby to wriggle and kick these off, I did the ribbing in size 8 needles(U.K. size ) and then changed to size 6 ( U.K. size ) and then did stripey leg warmers with some odds and ends of wool. Really great. Thanks for the inspiration. Veronica
