Sometimes I like to take a traditional craft and change it up a bit. This time I decided to make a faux cross stitch card. For this card, I made a cross stitch stamp to create the bow image. The stamp is really easy to make which you'll find in the directions below. Now that I've made one card, I'm thinking it would be nice to make a basic running stitch stamp as well. x-acto knife
Pencil with an eraser
pencil
Draw an "X" on the top of the eraser. Cut out excess eraser around the "X" with an x-acto knife. Test stamp. If necessary, carve more of the eraser away. Done.Supplies for Card

For the card, I choose to use a pattern from one of my Japanese Craft Books. I used just the bow in the pattern above. You don't have to have a pattern. It's really up to you.
Stamp any pattern you wish on your card. I recommend sticking to one color to make the stamping process go quicker. It's also a good idea to test out the stamp to figure out how far you want the stitches apart, how much pressure to use, etc.

Luckily I've got some cross stitch and running stitch stamps already, but making them from a pencil eraser is super cute!!

For so long now, I have been wanting to make my own stamp, and this looks great for a beginner like me (have you seen the dragonflies that Margie Ooman makes?).

I have been wanting to figure out a paper version of cross stitch for awhile, thank you so much for this. Now the ideas are flooding in. I may be able to carve a cork as well.
That's a really fun idea, and a good use for any of those cheap pencils with lead that breaks as soon as you look at it. I'm going to have to try this at some point and see what fun little cards I can make!

Good idea. I've been playing around with making some of my own stamps. One method that I've used is to ink a rubber stamp, then press it onto a piece of the thin craft foam. Then I take a somewhat sharp object (not as sharp as an exacto knife because that tends to tear the foam) and trace around the lines. What it makes is a reverse stamp, like a negative.
before I had to lock my carvers away from the kids I used to hand carve rubber stamps - this is a great idea for a mini stamp.

How did you get the faded/varied look with the stamped ink?

I just stamped two or three times before placing the stamp back on the ink pad. The more times I stamped, the more faded the "x's" got.

What a marvelous idea! Very tempting but as a cross stitcher, I may find it easier and more convenient to cross stitch the patterns than stamping because stamping requires a sturdy hand and precision. I am not that skilled.:)
