Jumping for Kinder Joy

My sister in law went to Germany a month ago a brought back a couple of goodies to share. One of the items she brought back for the kids were kinder joy eggs. I don't think I've ever been so excited to see a piece of candy before. Let me explain, a few years back I learned about Kinder eggs through a blog (can't remember which one or I would tell you). What I also learned about the Kinder egg was that they are banned in the US due to the small toy that can be a choking hazard. So every year around Easter a small part of me has been coveting these eggs.

So now, finally, I get to see what all the hype is about. These eggs are slightly different than the Kinder surprise eggs which are the ones I've seen online. Below are few pictures of the eggs.

First you open the egg in half. I love how the little spoon looks like the silhouette of a child. I'm not sure if that's what it's supposed to look like but that's what it looks like to me.

In one half of the egg is this candy. Curious what it tastes like? Me too. It was such a small amount that I didn't make the kids share with me. Honestly, I was just happy to see the eggs.

The other half had this little toy in it. I thought the toy was okay. In the past, I've seen some really neat toys that people got in their Kinder eggs so I guess I was expecting a little bit more.

Have any of you seen the Kinder eggs before? Tried one? Got something cool in it? Curious.

On a side note, sorry there was no craft this week. Things have been a little hectic so I just haven't had much time to make anything.

  1. i LOVE kinder eggs, I haven't seen this style before. Usually they are chocolate on the outside with white choc in the middle and then a yellow plastic egg inside that which contains the toy. When I lived in Italy me and the kids would get an egg every Saturday, we had such a collection of the little toys. They are not popular in japan which is surprising, I would have thought they would go for that kind of thing so my son had his first kinder egg at the airport in the UK - he loved it too!

  2. We also love kinder eggs at my house, I pick them up for my daughter every time I'm in Europe. Yes, they're banned here, and I'm prepared to forfeit them if I'm ever searched at customs but I'm buying them for a 10 year old - no choking hazard here!

I usually pick them up at the convenience stores in the city I'm visiting.

  3. Hi... that was great stuff.. I really like reading on this subject Could you tell me more on that... I love to explore

  4. The kinder eggs we got in Australia are like jojobei described - I have never seen this kind. They were super popular when they first came out (12 years ago maybe?) but now I am not so sure.
I don't know about here in the UK - I guess they are available but I rarely notice them!

  5. Here in Estonia we have eaten this kind of eggs. In our stores there are lots of differnt sort of chocolate eggs(for ex. disney cars, barbie, mickey, spiderman....) and usually they lokk like jojoebi described

  6. I guess the ones you saw before were the ones that are a chocolate shell with a yellow plastic egg inside, containing the toy? We have those here too (Norway). If you want me to send some, let me know :)

(I am probably weird, offering to send candy to a total stranger, lol.)

  7. Here in Italy you can find them in every store, even the littlest one. They are in the "traditional" form and in the newer form you blogged about. Sometimes they put in collections (e.g. The Smurfs) so children buy them trying to have every little Smurf ;) Their tagline is you can find a Smurf (or other collectibles) every 3 eggs. Sorry for the bad english, I just woke up!

  8. I've never seen Kinder eggs like these, in the UK we usually just have Kinder Surprise, I was amazed to hear that they are banned in the US! They also make 'Kinder Bueno' which is a chocolate bar( a bit more grown-up and delicious!).Yum yum!

  9. What you got there is the summer edition of the eggs. They are pretty new in Germany, we've only had them for a couple of years. Apparently they were introduced in Italy where the summer is really hot and therefore the usual chocolate egg would melt.

I prefer the winter version, which is a two-color chocolate egg as the others have described it.

Apparently, there's up to a $300 fine for importing these eggs into the US. Crazy!

  10. Check this!!
    www.magic-kinder.com

Here i Sweden we have Kinder eggs whith the yellow plastic egg inside and two different bars.
Sometimes it contains figures like Smurfs or from different Disney productions and sometimes small cars, aeroplanes, dinosaurs... (you name it...) that you have to build together.
The egg you show on the blog I have eaten when I was i Poland, so maybe it is an "mid-european"product??

  11. I have never seen the ones you've posted here either! The ones we get where I'm living now are the regular kinder egg from Germany, sometimes Hungary. It is such a thrill to open those two halves to see what is inside.
The toys make really great clip art, by photographing them against a white background and then removing the background in Gimp/Photoshop (though I have only done this once).
When my brother got married, his party favours (yes! in the US, he has a very good German friend) were kinder eggs in fancy boxes. It was so much fun.

  12. I really love kinder eggs - but the original one.
The kinder joy are the summer version, since handling the chocolate in hot weather is kinda messy and yeah.
I've eaten kinder eggs ever since I was a child, I still love them, but they've gotten expensive over the years so I rarely buy them.
I used to collect the little figures (back when I bought them regularly), and even today I enjoy them for a while (but I prefer those to put together over the ready-to-go collecting figures).

  13. Yep, we get the traditional Kinder surprises here. The toys are completely hit and miss. sometimes they're cool, sometimes they're rubbish. Not that I eat them often!! When I lived in France, we got M&M surprises, same sort of thing but the toy came in a flattish round case and was M&M based, they were BRILLIANT!

Hi, I live in Berlin/Germany and my daughter love the little eggs also, but more the "KinderĂ¼berraschung Eier" in winter. I hope, you have anyone of these in your refrigerator, because cold is it more "yummiyummi" :D!

I love your blog and I wish you a happy summer!

    Happy greetings from Berlin

  15. It's like Cracker Jack toys. They used to have really cool tiny toys, but now, they have paper junk. Half the time, I can't even figure out what it is suppose to be. We don't eat many Cracker Jacks in our house anymore.

  16. Here in Australia, it's as Jojoebi described - the outer layer of chocolate then the plastic egg full of toys. Can be little action figures that you put together, trinkets and I've even come across minature puzzles! They're totally different to the one you've shown.

There's also a Disney Princess version from another brand. My daughter loves these as you get figurines of the princesses.

  17. there is also a winter edition of the joy eggs ;o)

  20. My parents owned a bar/café and they sold them, many different kinds of them! We live in Italy and there's no prob with selling them here. I owned a HUGE collection of the surprises inside but I'm giving those toys to my cousin which is barely 3y/o but my mum said it's ok. You see, there are "offers" about the surprises inside. At supermarkets, they sell the egg three at once in a small box and you're guaranteed to find 1 special toy and 2 regular ones. The special toys are part of collection. Some of them have been: Bears bathing and eating ice creams and doing other summer things, little purple vampires doing stuff, Guinea pigs in chinese traditional activities, turtles having fun and stuff like that. Other suprises might be little cars, puzzles and little random toys.
My parents had big boxes on the counter and the kids could chose the egg they preferred (and so the 1 special and 2 random surprises ratio didn't work in these boxes). This way I managed to collect many special collection toys.
The egg you posted is a summer version of kinder eggs and it's made so that the egg doesn't melt in your hand and it's, instead a premade chocolate cream which tastes like the original egg (the one divided in two halves with a orange plastic "egg-like" container inside with the toy), with layers of chocolate and white choco and those 2 crunchy spheres with choco inside.

The original eggs are not only made by Kinder (which means "child" in german, I think) but also, in italy, by "Dolci preziosi" (precious sweets) and the collections inside used to be about famous cartoons like Hamtaro, Tokyo Mew Mew, Sailor Moon and lately Ben Ten and others.

    I hope I've said something useful! ;)

  21. My husband bought this one few days ago. We've got a pretty nice little car from the "Cars". So i was satisfied and my son too.

  22. I was overjoyed as well to find the Kindereggs in the US... it looks like you got a sorry little jelly fish, but I've had much better toys- ones that you have to assemble in the ones from the US. My favorites will always be the european ones with the giant "pill" in the middle... but Ican still be happy with the new ones. Also, have you seen the "KinderHippo"? Sooooo cute!! And yummy too!

  23. One of my co-workers is from Italy and she is constantly bringing back Kinder candies for us. One of my Kinder surprise eggs had a little Kung Fu Panda figurine in it. However, my absolute favorite are the Happy Hippos, basically a hollow wafer cookie shaped like the hippos in the old Hungry Hippo children's game that are filled with a chocolate hazelnut or other flavored cream. We asked for them so much at the local Cost Plus that they now always have them in stock for us!

  24. Ooh, I love Kinder eggs! They're everywhere in the UK, but I've never seen them like this before! The ones I always have are always hollow white & milk chocolate eggs, wrapped in foil, and in the centre is a little yellow capsule which pops open to reveal the toy. This kind looks very intriguing!

  25. Here in Argentina they are popular too, both, this one and the one with the yellow plastic egg. I bought one months ago but I was disappointed when I saw the toy, when I was younger (more than 10 years ago?) the toy was way cooler than now, they had instructions to build them and you could collect them, like old cars and planes or cute animals. Aw I miss them!

  29. This site sells Kinder Eggs in the US...shhh. :) And I've ordered from them before so I can vouch for their service. I don't know how the prices compare to when you buy them in Europe though. http://www.melandrose.com/asp_pages/index.asp

  30. I lived in Germany for 3 years and my kids came to love kinder eggs just as much as I had. Now in nj, I can only find them in small shops imported from Italy or Russia. In Germany they had giant ones around the holidays, which were always a big hit too...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love Kinder Eggs! You can get them most places in Canada as well. But have not seen this particular kind yet. They are very popular around the holidays, but can still be found in most stores. Some days they have a good toy, and somedays not so much, though!

  32. I've only seen the ones the other commenters mentioned. While I was in Ireland last month, my friends and I got some. My toy was a little monkey on a leaf that throws a flower. It's cute although it doesn't quite work (the flower doesn't fit in the hands so it just rests next to his feet heh). My friend got a sailboat which i thought was cute but he was unimpressed. I was just happy to see something "illegal" lol.

  33. Hello

I know the two kind of eggs: i'm portuguese and in portugal we have the ones that are a chocolate shell with a yellow plastic egg inside, containing the toy. But right now i live in Germany, so i know the eggs you show here. If you want i could send you both (in Agost i will be in Portugal)

  34. We have Kinder eggs here in Finland too. But they are mostly seen around Easter time. I'd be willing to send you a couple also, if you'd like. Let me know.

  35. I brought back a Kinder Egg from Greece for my godson last month, but he threw the toy to the side and moved on to the rest of his souvenirs. Sigh. I found out about them from the Rosie O'Donnell show- remember that?

  36. I have been grown up with these eggs.(First generation) and my children and my grandchild as well. But it is nice to readlines like this, because here they are so well known and "nothing special". That's why I loved to read these words and could imagine how it must be for someone who can't buy it in every shop.

  37. me and my children had it almost every week, just to get the 'surprise' in the eggs.

  38. HEre in Malaysia they are on sale everywhere. We have gotten both kinds of eggs, though lately the ones we have gotten are these kind, so I guess they have phased out the old style.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I haven't tried this version, but i think it's the one for summer, when the other one melts.
toys inside used to be different years ago. they contained small parts you had to assemble with little instructions and drawings attatched. now most of them come with a one-piece toy, safer (bigger) but not so amusing

    ReplyDelete
  40. as far as I know, kinder eggs are not banned in the USA because the toys are a choking hazard, but because there is some law that doesn't allow you to have an inedible item inside an edible one. But maybe that's an urban legend...

  44. Hi,
I'm from Germany, and my son is 6 years old, so I know Kinder-eggs for sure :-)

There are 2 kinds of Kinder-eggs from that company. The one you show is only sold in summer. The egg with chocolate-shell is available year-round.

I must say that about 10 years ago the toys were way better than now. You almost everytime got something really cute (little cars, toys with moving parts, little puzzles), but nowadays it's mostly dissappointing: Little weird figures or toys that don't work as shown.

AND the chocolate is super sweet. It (with other sweets from the same company) was on the top-10-list of food with the highest sugar content...

For you it may be a seldom treat, but here in Germany you can buy these at every shop and it can be hard to always say "no, not today" to your little one...
But, as there are now so many stupid toys in these eggs, my son now asks for other treats...

I always enjoy your blog and your cute ideas!
    Bettina

  45. I would be happy to send you some from Australia....please let me know if you would like them. My kids love them, although the tv commercial that we have here has got to be about the worst I have ever seen!!! It's a shocker!

  46. Tried before and IMHO it's a total rip-off at 1 or 2 bucks per egg and for me, its too sweet (im just 14 and not an adult, by the way)
the packaging in kinda cuter than the usual choc egg shells

    ReplyDelete
  47. Min, If I had to pay 1-2 dollars/euros per egg, I too would find it a rip off! They are normally ,80 cents here (maybe a bit cheaper around easter when there are sales).
Also, like you, I don't eat them very often as I prefer other chocolates more. But every once in a while it is fun to get a surprise. :)

Here in Spain we got the Barbie kind, the fair trade kind, Disney´s...etc.
not only the "kinder" brand (which is italian, by Ferrero-Roche)

    ReplyDelete
  50. We get those here in Israel, and other Kinder milk candies. I heard something about the eggs being taken off the market because the toy inside was a choking hazard. Seriously! Next those dangerous fortune cookies will have to go!

  51. Hey there,
I live in the land of Kinder Eggs and prefer them over Kinder Joy (the toys are usually not much different but the taste is a little better in the eggs). Kinder Eggs usually take a break in summer ;). German chocolate is made without wax like in the U.S. and it would melt in summer, so they came up with the Kinder Joy instead for the hot months. Early Fall, the real Kinder Eggs are back and I can´t wait for them. If you also love the chocolate minus the toy, you could get Kinder Schokolade, which is the chocolate bar version made of the same chocolate as the Kinder Egg shell. Come over to visit and stuff your bags ;)!
