Road Trip to Oregon

Silver Falls, OR

Ever feel like you need a vacation from your vacation?  That's how I was feeling after we returned from Oregon.  We arrived home a week ago but it has taken me a week to recover and get my bearings. Driving 12 hours in a car with two kids is exhausting among many other things.

One of the places we visited was Silver Falls.  If you're ever in Oregon, it's definitely worth visiting.  There's a place to picnic and swim (which we did first).  Then we walked to one of the fall viewpoints where I took the waterfall photo (top). The walk to that point was only about five minutes.  There are more trails that lead to the bottom of the falls but we didn't have time to do that.  We spent most of our day eating, playing, and swimming.

Something new for us was getting to play with and watch fireworks at my father's house.  Where we live, fireworks are illegal so this was a fun and a new experience for our kids.  My children really enjoyed the sparklers.

During the planning of this trip, there was just one place my husband had to visit while we were in Oregon, Voodoo Doughnut.  They're known for their unique flavors combinations.  When we got there, there was a line out the door and around the building.  It took about ten minutes to order which wasn't that bad.  Some of the doughnut flavors we tried were, Fruit Loops, Grape, Bubblegum, Butterfinger, and Orange Tang.

We broke up our 12 hour drive by staying in Ashland, OR one night.  I wish we could have stayed there longer, it's such a lovely town.  Ashland is probably most known for their Shakespeare Festival which runs from
June to October.

Pictured above is a photo of Lithia Park which is located in downtown Ashland.   It is one of the prettiest parks I've been to.

Have you ever been to Oregon?  Any recommendations for places to see next time we visit?

  1. Oregon is a state I wish to visit again. I immediately recognized Voodoo donuts from a show we watched about great food places around the country. Thanks for sharing the joy of the trip.

  3. Your pictures look great! I tried to schedule a trip out west last year simply because I wanted to visit VooDoo doughnuts. The rest of my family vetoed it (that's all I could come up with at the time.. .thinking it was a good enough reason).
If I did go, I'd also probably want to visit Powell's bookstore because I always hear about it online - don't know if it's any different than east coast bookstores though.

  4. I'm a 6th generation Oregonian! I'm so glad to hear that you had a fun visit. I may be biased (grin), but I think Oregon is pretty fantastic and diverse. Where else can you see city, alpine meadows, high dessert, ocean beaches, and farmland valleys (and more) all in a day's drive? We live in Corvallis, which is a cute, little university town. Super berry picking spots and bike riding trails. The McKenzie Highway is a wonderful drive, central and eastern Oregon are fun for outdoor adventures, and the coast has all sorts of wonderful places to visit and beach comb. I've hard that the Illinois river over near where you were in southern Oregon is breathtakingly beautiful. Come back soon for another visit! :)
