I finally got around to making my daughter some hair clips. This has been on the to-do list for quite some time now. Since I had all the supplies out, I made a second set as a gift (pictured above). And because I was feeling extra crafty, I made a tag for them as well.
If you've been online for any time now, you know this is an old idea that's been done many times. Because of that, I'm just sharing brief instructions on how to make them.
I got this fabric a while back from Modes4U if anyone is interested. It's so pretty, I don't want to waste it. I don't know what it is about me and fabric but I never have the heart to cut into it. So, if you have any suggestions on what else I should make with the fabric, please share.
To make the hair clips I first made some fabric covered buttons. You can find fabric covered button kits at most fabric stores. It takes about 10 seconds to make a fabric covered button. Next all you have to do is glue the button to a standard hair clip. I recommend using E-6000 glue because it's strong and flexible when it dries. That's it, super easy right?
*Fabric Button Tip: To keep your fabric centered when making a fabric button, apply a little fabric glue to the top of the metal button.
So Cute! Love the way the gold is trimmed around the button! Perfect like the fabric was made just for this!
ReplyDeleteyou always have simple but beautiful ideas. I like the copper color hair clip.
ReplyDeleteI love love love this idea!
ReplyDeleteAll your ideas are inspirational! I love the button covered hair clips. I've used ribbon to make these and they've been very successful. To use up some of the leftover fabric, you may like to make a little box to store the hair clips.
ReplyDeleteAdorable - that fabric is amazing. I too have trouble using my stash. How about a little purse to coordinate. Perhaps a fabric covered picture frame - or even a photo matte. Such a cute job.
ReplyDeleteI became obsessed with making those darn fabric buttons. Since I have access to the metal buttons, I set up a small shop on Etsy where I sell them: http://brinnet.etsy.com
ReplyDeleteJust in case you're interested and don't have a shop nearby :)
I guess if you REALLY don't want to waste any bits, you could use them to make towels? Since they're rectangular there's no cut-out shape that would waste fabric.
ReplyDeleteEither:
1)applique/attach it to regular bath towels (maybe pink?) and decorate a set of towels that way, or
2)to give with a kids' teapot set, make little tea towels for it! That would be cute with the hair clips :)
love this fabric!
ReplyDeletedid you pop the shank off the back of the buttons, or leave on?
These are so cute! I never saw them made with buttons before. The fabric is gorgeous, I'm the same I feel guilty cutting into it! 1835-b's idea for a teatowel is cute, maybe a tea cosy too and you'll be all ready for the Mad Hatters tea party!
ReplyDeleteThose are adorable! I need to find this fabric! It is amazing!
ReplyDeleteOh, these are beautiful. I have been writing about Lewis Carroll and Alice and so I would love to have similar clips as a gift for a little girl. I think I will do a link to these on the facebook page for the book.
ReplyDeleteVery nice. Have a nice weekend!

ReplyDeleteyour daughter will have lots of those clips, so cool

ReplyDeleteLove the clips!!
ReplyDeleteI too have a hard time cutting into fav fabrics. I still have my Heather Ross fairy tale fabric untouched. What about a cute little book tote? Pair with Alice in Wonderland story book and it would make a very fun gift. :)
Is beautiful! I like this clips very much!
